28mm Renaissance Scottish Army of James IV – Part III

This is the centre division of my 28mm renaissance Scottish army personally commanded and led by James IV himself. The division contains the combined forces of the earls of Cassillis, Morton and Rothes and those of the lords Herries, Maxwell, Innermeath, Borthwick and Sempill.

In this post we are looking at the centre division of my 28mm renaissance Scottish army. As in my previous post the division is based upon the original deployment from James IV’s army at Flodden.

Led by James IV himself and containing the combined forces of no less than eight Earls and Lords. It is at least twice as big as any of the other divisions in the army, and is packed with men at arms and plenty of banners.

Along with the coats of arms of the attending lords, the division also carries into battle the Saltire (St Andrews Cross), the Royal Standard (Lion Rampant), and the banners of St Andrew and St Margaret.

As with the rest of the army the miniatures I used for this division were a mixture of Perry Miniatures WOTR billmen, foot knights and European mercenaries. Billmen were converted using Warlord Games pikes for the front rank of the block.

Pikes

Because the central division has double the frontage of any other block in the army the pikes that I had available for this unit are spread more thinly, with only a single rank at the front and rear of the division.

The pikemen in this division were given the same treatment as the rest of the conscripts/levies throughout the rest of the army. In order to give some continuity they were painted in earthy tones, and bases of The Army Painter Brown Battleground, Steppe Grass and Lowland Shrubs.

With the pikemen being spread one deep at the front and rear the other rank in each base was filled out with men at arms, as you can see in the pictures. Throughout the army, single minis are based on pennies and all the movement trays (from Warbases) have neodymuim magnets.

I may increase the amount of pikemen at a later date to bring them in line with the other divisions (two deep, front and rear).

Earls and Lords

Given that I only have single ranks of pikemen to the front and rear of the division the men at arms in this block are based a little differently. As with the other divisions, each Earl or Lord is represented with a standard and four retainers (six in total).

The second rank of the front blocks are made up of King James, the four main banners and a single bodyguard, plus the Earl Marischal, William Keith, with his standard and retainers. With their associated pikemen this makes two blocks of twelve.

The middle two blocks of twelve comprise of the Earls of Cassillis and Morton with standards and retainers on one side, and the Earl of Rothes and Lord Innermeath on the other. Making up the rear are two blocks of fifteen, pikemen at the rear. On one side Lords Sempill and Borthwick, on the other Lords Maxwell and Herries.

All banners throughout the army are homemade and based on the original coat of arms of each Scottish lord.
