This is the left centre division of my 28mm Renaissance Scottish army led by the Earls of Errol, Crawford and Montrose. Containing men at arms and pikemen from Perry Miniatures.

The next instalment of my 28mm Renaissance Scottish army. This time we are looking at the centre-left division under the command of the Earls of Errol, Crawford and Montrose. As in my previous post the division is based upon the original deployment from James IV’s Flodden army. The miniatures I used for this division were a mixture of Perry Miniatures WOTR billmen, foot knights and European mercenaries. Billmen were converted using Warlord Games pikes for the front two rows of the block.
pikemen
The pikemen in the centre-left division were given the same treatment as the rest of the conscripts/levies throughout the rest of the army. In order to give some continuity they were painted in earthy tones, and bases of The Army Painter Brown Battleground, Steppe Grass and Lowland Shrubs. These were based in units of twelve as they would double up nicely in games of Lion Rampant. As with the rest of the army, single minis are based on pennies and all the movement trays (from Warbases )have neodymuim magnets.
men at arms
The men at arms in the centre ranks of the division are based as a fifteen but painted in three lots of six. When researching the deployment of the army I realised early on that the ranks would be choc full of nobles and their retainers. So I had to come up with an economical way to disperse them throughout the army. By painting up an Earl with a standard and four men at arms to represent each noble (on foot anyway) I was able to identify the major characters in each division. Also, by painting them as a six, the miniatures become multifunctional. I can the use them in other games systems. These men at arms represent the Earls of Errol, Crawford and Montrose with their banners and bodyguards.
Throughout the army banners are homemade and based on the original coat of arms of each Scottish lord.
